Smith recently joined Deloitte Consulting in Washington, DC.  She was previously  with Leavitt Partners, where she was a director guiding the firm's health insurance exchange practice. She previously served in the Utah Governor's Office of Economic Development as the director of policy and strategy of the Utah Health Exchange, one of only two state health insurance exchanges already in operation.
 
Smith's preeminence in her field has made her a popular speaker on the topic of health insurance exchanges at national conferences sponsored by the National Conference of State Legislatures (NCSL), the Republican Governors Association (RGA), the National Conference of Insurance Legislators (NCOIL), and America's Health Insurance Plans (AHIP).
