Nicole Martin
Nicole graduated from Brigham Young University with a B.A. in public relations
and worked in the private sector for more than 15 years. She has since worked in
the public sector with municipalities including Herriman City and currently, Sandy
City as the communications director.
Nicole was also recently elected to city council in Herriman City, giving her an
opportunity to look at communications from “both sides of the political table”.
As the public information officer for Herriman City, Nicole handled multiple crisis
situations including three wildfires in three years, most notable being the Machine
Gun Fire in 2010. The crisis communications was effective using both media
relations and social media outreach.
A proponent of developing a diversified communications approach, Nicole has
recently launched SandyNow!. This comprehensive communications approach
utilizes social media, online interactive tools, mobile technology, video storytelling
and traditional means to better engage residents and encourage interactive
conversations.
“Communications can often be the biggest failure in both crisis situation and in
daily life, so public information officers need to have a plan that allows them to
inform on services, correct misinformation, connect quickly in an emergency and
respond to impending needs,” said Martin.
When not living and breathing communications, Nicole enjoys hanging out with
her husband and three kids. Occasionally, she’ll escape on her Harley…no cell
phone allowed!
